AMATEUR/SENIOR/HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIPS

Posted on May 28, 2022

As always, Norm and his pro shop crew at Cowichan Golf Club were very welcoming, but there wasn’t much they could do to control the sometimes howling wind and just plain cold and wet underfoot.  Nevertheless, everyone got through the first day of the Championships, Monday, May 16th.  We were just short of a full field due to a couple of last minute cancellations.

Next day, May 17th, we were back down Island for the final day at Cordova Bay Golf Club.  Much better weather conditions prevailed right through to presentations.

If these pictures look similar, it’s because PENNY BAZIUK of Cordova Bay won both the AMATEUR and SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS.  Penny and her club mate, Denise Walker will represent the Zone in the Team Competition at the BCGA Senior Championship at Fairwinds the week of May 30th.

       Amateur Champion                                                                                     Senior Champion

Our Amateur trophy has been around since 1920, and this March 2022, we decided it was time for retirement.    It was originally sponsored by Begg Motors, then CFAX, Metro Lexus and finally the Pattison Group.  This trophy was big, heavy and a bit fragile, and only one club could display in a secure area.  For a couple of years, we had a hard time finding it at the clubs; one year it was discovered in a janitor’s closet!  The trophy now resides with the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame where if you frequent Save-On-Foods arena (Gate #3),  you may find it in one of the cases in the near future.  The old lady (102 years of age), may be a bit cumbersome to handle, but she packs a great deal of history for our Zone, a trophy won by several women over the years, but multiple times by Margaret Todd, Dorothy Wilks(deGerolimo), Diane Rands (Phillips), and Alison Murdoch.  Penny’s name is also engraved as the 2004 winner and will be the first name on its replacement.

In the HANDICAP category, our new Champion is CATIA EVANS of Olympic View Golf Club

    2022 Handicap Champion
