A 5-day event, now in its 76th year, the FOURSOMES is by far the most popular event on the Zone 5 schedule. Sixty-one pairs teed off at Cowichan Golf Club to qualify into flights for the following 4 days. The format for Qualifying is stroke play, alternate shot. However, when the Flights are set, the next 4 days consist of Match Play, alternate shot. After the first two days of match play, the field is cut in half and once again for the finals.
The ladies had already battled weather ranging from terrible to tolerable and finally terrific for the finals, and what a thrilling climax to the Championship was witnessed on the 18th hole. A back and forth match the entire round with no strokes given, the pairs battled it out, right down to the wire with the Medalists, Debbie Ottenbreit and Deb King of Highland Pacific, edging out Jennifer Smith and Irene Beddoes of Cordova Bay, on the final hole.
Congratulations to all the ladies who played on the final day. It is a grueling task to keep up your energy when faced with a different course each day, who knows what the weather will bring, and of course still playing alternate shot. Going back to Margaret Todd’s claim we still believe that we could be one of the few women’s golf organizations playin this format, or perhaps the only one, in North America
