Today, November 12th, Dawn Coe Jones lost her battle with bone cancer at age 56. A sad day for Canadian women’s golf, and particularly for those of us on Vancouver Island who knew, watched and cheered with pride at Dawn’s successes on the LPGA.
Friends of Dawn’s and volunteers will remember Dawn attending the Girls’ Junior Americas Cup held at Royal Colwood Golf Club in 2004. We knew Dawn would be making her annual visit to Lake Cowichan and asked if she would be our guest speaker for the Championship. A few of us had some concern that the girls wouldn’t relate to Dawn as her LPGA career was winding down, but after her amusing, down-to-earth and inspiring talk to the juniors, our fears were set aside. In fact the girls swarmed her with questions and request for autographs and had to be asked to return to their seats so dinner could be served. Dawn was a true supporter of junior golf throughout her career and retirement.
Our deepest condolences to Dawn’s family, friends and fans. We share in this time of grief but also share in the love and memories of Dawn Coe Jones RIP
